She showed her work to him in a joint exhibition, also including her mother-in-law, Laura Theresa Anna Alma-Tadema, who never married, died in 1943, aged seventy-six. Toward the end of my tour of “Great British Drawings” I found Anna Alma-Tadema (1865-1943). I’d already made a page of notes about Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s watercolors of scenes from his translation of his namesake’s La Vita Nuova featuring Elizabeth “Lizzie” Siddal (1829-1862), his muse, model, and wife. Lourens Alma Tadema was born on 8 January 1836 in the village of Dronryp in the province of Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. The surname Tadema is an old Frisian patronymic, meaning 'son of Tade', while the names Lourens and Alma came from his godfather. Anna was the younger daughter of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and his first wife who died in 1869.
